The Fairy Creek Blockade, operating since May 17, has been demonstrating and protesting against the logging of old growth forests situated on unceded Pacheedaht and Ditidaht territory in BC.
The Blockade’s efforts have pushed BC legislation to temporarily suspend logging in the Fairy Creek Watershed for two years, encouraging the requests of Indigenous communities in the area to be respected.
While this is promising news, it is only temporary. The Fairy Creek Blockade’s work is FAR from over!
Show up for Fairy Creek, now more than ever!
1. Live in BC? Join the protests at Fairy Creek’s HQ, hand out food or water to the demonstrators, or offer up a ride to participants!
2. Don’t live in BC? Donate to the Blockade’s gofundme or share its link!
3. Have social media? Follow Fairy Creek and circulate its posts, videos, and statements from protestors at the Blockade. Let their voices and efforts be heard and seen!

Fairy Creek is “the last unprotected, intact old-growth valley on southern Vancouver Island” . Old growth forests play a crucial role in our ecosystems, providing essential ecosystem services like carbon sequestration, habitat for wildlife, and cultural value for Indigenous peoples and nature-lovers.
Some of these trees are 800 years old!
Logging these old-growth forests poses severe damage on the people, history, biodiversity, and ecosystems surrounding them!

“These deferrals still allow most of the old-growth logging already permitted in Fairy Creek, and old growth is still falling across the province. The protests will continue in Fairy Creek and I expect we will see more Fairy Creeks across the province.” Tzeporah Berman
Kevin Rothbauer for Saanich News
“The Rainforest Flying Squad, which is coordinating the protests, expressed concerns about some the arrests on Monday and Tuesday on the Fairy Creek Blockade Facebook page”
“The RCMP arrested 12 people on Monday, eight on Tuesday, and four on Wednesday, bringing the total number of arrests to 198 since enforcement began on May 17”
“The RFS reported that the RCMP used an excavator to extract the protesters in the sleeping dragons. ‘There are other safer methods they could employ, but they choose the intimidation of large machinery,’ the Facebook report said”
Justine Hunter for The Globe and Mail
“On June 1, the B.C. government announced a new forestry plan, proposing to double the amount of timber harvesting rights now held by Indigenous communities in the province. The policy change is designed to advance reconciliation by ensuring that First Nations see more benefits from the resources taken out of their traditional territories.”
“The B.C. government has suspended old-growth logging in the Fairy Creek watershed and in the nearby Central Walbran at the request of local Indigenous communities”
“But between the two deferral zones on southern Vancouver Island, old-growth logging will continue – as will protests.”
“Unless they include the entire 2080 Ha rainforest [in the deferral] then nothing will change in the fight to protect the area.”
“This is the last stand for our forests. It’s also important to recognize that a deferral is just a deferral, it’s not protection.”

Almost 15 percent of greenhouse gas emissions globally come from livestock (and everything involved in raising it); 61 percent of those emissions can be traced back to beef.
Cows are 20 times less efficient to raise than beans and roughly three times less efficient than poultry and pork.
It might not feel like much, but cutting out just a single ingredient—beef—can have an outsize impact on making a person’s cooking more environmentally friendly.

CBC – Why Beef is off the Menu for some Climate-Conscious Foodies
Last week, the major U.S. food magazine and website, Epicurious, took a public stand on the issue by announcing they were no longer publishing beef recipes, because of how carbon-intensive the protein is.
“If you think about the point of a food publication like Epicurious, the whole point, its entire purpose, is to influence the way that people eat,”
“We have to think about sustainability. We have to think about future generations, because history will find us accountable for the choices that we make now.”
“Given the very high GHG emission intensity of beef, it should not be surprising that this analysis found that diversifying Canadian protein intake away from beef to be such an attractive option for lowering the GHG emission budget of the Canadian agriculture sector,” the report said.
[Ikeila Wright] is part of a growing number of people who are worried about the carbon footprint of meat — and beef in particular, which the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization estimates is responsible for 41 per cent of all livestock emissions, far more than other meats.

It might not feel like much, but cutting out just a single ingredient—beef—can have an outsize impact on making a person’s cooking more environmentally friendly.
Addressing climate change requires legislation, international cooperation, and buy-in from the corporate sector. Individual actions like choosing alt-meat—or mushrooms, or chickpeas—instead of the real thing can feel so small they’re essentially pointless. But every time you abstain from beef at the grocery store or a restaurant, you send a signal—to the grocery store, yes, but also, and perhaps more influentially, to whomever you talk to about your decision. Our announcement today is simply us loudly (and proudly!) letting you, the home cook, know about a step we’re taking. (Admittedly, we’re also hoping the rest of American food media joins us too.)

Use your green bin or compost at every possible opportunity!
Did you know that many household waste items can be put in your green bin? This includes pet waste, soiled paper towels/plates/napkins/pizza boxes, hair trimmings, and more!
The organic waste facility has been retrofitted to rip open the plastic bags and separate the organic waste for composting. The plastic bags are then sent to landfill. The paper and compostable bags will begin to break down, along with the food and organic waste, while the material decomposes in the composting tunnels. Any paper and compostable bags that do not break down are screened from the compost. Smaller screened pieces may be recirculated through the process, bigger screened pieces are sent to landfill. Everyone! The global economy has been hit hard, especially small businesses. Let’s get immunized so we can get back to enjoying gathering with friends and family and supporting the businesses that make our community better!
The ultimate goal is to vaccinate EVERYONE who is able to safely receive a COVID-19 vaccine!
We must all do our part and get vaccinated with both doses as soon as we can.
A top World Health Organization official estimated Monday that COVID-19 vaccination coverage of at least 80% is needed to significantly lower the risk that “imported” coronavirus cases like those linked to new variants. CityNews
News of these COVID-19 variants are concerning! As different regions open up more this spring and summer, we need to stay vigilant of the spread. Early data has been showing that a single dose of most vaccines available offer diminished effectiveness against the delta variant that is currently dominating in many areas.
Look for opportunities to get both your first and second dose as soon as possible, and/or help a family member do the same!

Abortion Access and Rights in Canada
CBC – Abortion barriers in Canada are back in spotlight following passage of abortion bans in U.S.
“What we’ve heard anecdotally is that their wait lists are so long,” Segal said. “Women face wait lists of five, six weeks — which, if you don’t know you’re pregnant right away, can mean that by the time you have your appointment, you’re ineligible for abortion in the province.”
Funding, distance to medical facilities and a patchwork of provincial laws all mean an abortion is not as easy to obtain in Canada as some may think.
“People often conflate the two, thinking that because it’s decriminalized, it’s very easy to access in our country — and it’s not the case,” said Frédérique Chabot, director of health promotion at Action Canada for Sexual Health and Rights.
“There’s been very little progress done to make sure that abortion is actually, in fact, accessible to everyone in Canada equally.”
Ontario does not fund abortions at every clinic, while New Brunswick does not fund abortions at clinics at all, only in hospitals.
in the case of New Brunswick, the “federal government has failed to penalize the province by withholding transfer payments.”
PEI only opened an abortion clinic in 2016. Before that, you had to leave the island to receive one.

Global News – Abortion Rules in Canada
Abortion in Canada is unlikely to face the legal threats it is facing in the United States, but experts say there are still ways the right can be undermined.
After the 1988 decision, abortion was treated like any other medical procedure without a law governing it — and therefore it’s now up to provinces to regulate access.
“It’s one of the reasons why we can still say we have something of a patchwork access to abortion in Canada,”
Provinces have “tried to effectively recriminalize abortion by blocking access. Rather than going a strictly legal route to restricting access, they’ve tried to change the regulation threshold.”
Science Direct When there are no abortion laws: A case study of Canada
Regulating abortion as a healthcare service has not led to higher abortion rates.
Average gestational age at abortion is decreasing as access to services increases.
Initially Canadian provinces attempted to provide restrictive regulations and legislation, all of which have been revoked and largely replaced with supportive policies that improve equitable, accessible, state-provided abortion service.
Abortion rates have been stable over 30 years since decriminalization, and a falling proportion of abortions occur late in the second trimester.
Canada demonstrates that abortion care can safely and effectively be regulated as a normal component of usual medical care.

For Earth Day, Allure magazine is rethinking the terminology it uses around sustainability and is hoping the beauty industry will follow suit
That includes never referring to any type of plastic as “recyclable” since — while many plastics are capable of being recycled — only 9 percent of all plastic waste ever produced has actually been turned into something that was then able to be used again.
Also banned from the pages of the glossy magazine when it comes to describing packaging are the terms “earth-friendly,” “eco-friendly,” “planet-friendly” and “biodegradable.” Allure explained that while the latter defines a substance or object that is capable of being decomposed by bacteria or other living organisms, there is no specific time limit and most landfills don’t have enough oxygen to get the job done.
